- NEW UK CD-ROM Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1919

This new CD contains information about every soldier and officer
in the British Army killed in WWI. This represents over 672,000
individuals. The information on the CD includes the name,
regiment, battalion, town and county of birth, town of
enlistment, regimental number, rank, whether killed in action,
died of wounds etc with dates and supplementary notes. This new
CD is available through Macbeths for $A550. Stock now available.

The CD actually is two databases: one soldiers; and the other
officers. The search software is good. It does take truncation
'*' symbol. You are not able to browse all the values in a
field. The databases are searchable by regiment, battalion,
surname, given names, rank and date. You are able to printout
a record for an individual or a limited printout by surname.

We will be offering a printout service for this CD.

- Vale - Bill Wellsted and Marion Button

As we near the end of the year and look back it has been a sad
year for professional genealogists in Victoria with two members
of Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents
(AAGRA) dying. Farewell Bill Wellsted and Marion Button, well
respected members of the small band of professional researchers
in Victoria and indeed in Australia.

Marion Button was only in her 40s but had worked so hard
indexing important records from newspapers and from records at
the Public Record Office of Victoria that she will leave her
mark in the form of her publications for the use of family
historians today and in the future.

Bill Wellsted, by my recollection, was one of Joan Wills'
research team at the Genealogical Society of Victoria (GSV)
since the mid-1980s. Since then and in a volunteer capacity he
has helped many members of the GSV forward their research using
the resources of the GSV. He also undertook private
professional work and will always be remembered as a gentleman.

- Australian Beneficiaries of Scottish Estate Worth $17 million

Many of you probably read about the search for beneficiaries in
Australia of a Scottish estate worth over $A17 million. It was
in the Sunday edition of the 'Sun-Herald' in Victoria on 22
November 1998. Macbeth's research team handled the Australian
research of the Australian stem. The assignment was sent to us
by fax and received in the office on the morning of 19 November
and was solved by that afternoon. By 6 pm we had traced and
documented the brother of the deceased, Helen Lowe, and
descended his line to grandchildren. All in less than a day and
before it was in the newspapers! When we started researching we
did not even knowing in which part of Australia he settled.

Thank you to the applications staff of the Victorian BDMs for
their wonderful help.

- Ramblings from Sue

I have several things to mention in this newsletter. The first
is the problem we have had with the mailing list. Unbeknownst
to us the ISP lost our automatic mailing list. Although it has
now been reconstructed it is not complete. Those who have been
lost from the list will not receive this newsletter and I have
no way of telling them 'cause we do not know who they are. If
any one can hear me I am sorry for the problem. I understand
this will never happen again.

Another thing I wanted to mention is the number of emails which
never seem to reach us. And the number of people who send us
emails to which we cannot reply since they have not setup their
system correctly or mistype their address. Again, sorry but
there is little I can do about it.

I understand Nick Vine Hall has seen the light and moved back to
Victoria again after less than a year in Sydney. Welcome back
Nick.

We have had lots of telephone calls asking about the new
'Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836 - 1888' on CD and fiche. We
expect it to be available in late January at the earliest.
Pre-publication information indicated it would be available in
October but for several reasons (including the shifting of the
Registry) the production was delayed.

Macbeths is accepting orders. Both formats are $220 posted in
Australia. If a customer wishes to return their old version of
the Pioneer Index on either fiche or CD when they purchase this
third edition, they need only return their copy and pay $200.

Many people have asked if they can return the fiche and order a
CD. Yes you can. And visa versa.

Note the CD is on new Digger(tm) software. The third edition
has over 300,000 corrections made to it. I am unable to
evaluate the data since I have not yet had my grubby little
hands on it.

Macbeth's research department has been very busy in the last 6
months doing research work searching for the descendants of Jews
who owned land in East Berlin before WWII. They are to receive
compensation for having their land taken away from them. In
most cases we have been successful although in many cases there
are no heirs. We are working for clients in Germany in this
matter.

==============================================================

- Calling for Electronic Databases for CD-ROM Production

Since the development of the Digger(tm) just over 12 months ago
we have produced nearly 5 CD-ROMs with another title due in
February. We are also having discussions with many organisation
about putting their information on Digger(tm). As well we are
also planning a CD of many little databases and now call for
input. If you have or know of information in electronic form
which is suitable for CD production we would be pleased to hear
from you. The type of database we would like are cemeteries or
any person indexed records. To put small databases on one CD is
not cost effective but to put lots would be.

==============================================================

- New CD-ROMs from the LDS

The LDS have produced three new CD-ROMs of interest to family
historians: British Vital Records; 1881 British Census; and
American Vital Records. They are available from the LDS
Distribution Centre, PO Box 350, Carlingford NSW 2118. Postage
is included in the price. These represent amazing value. I have
played with the census and found it most useful. It is not just
an index but a full transcription of the census returns.

British Vital Records $25
1851 British Census $8 Devon, Norfolk and Warwick only
American Vital Records $22
